Boiling Water in a Paper Cup (TH-B-BW)



Demonstrates how the thermal conductivity of water through the paper cup keeps the cup at a point below its combustion point.

LAB EQUIPMENT

1.  Paper cup (small, pleated, Solo brand)
2.  Wire screen
3.  Tripod
4.  Propane torch
5.  Pie tin

STYROFOAM CUPS WILL NOT WORK FOR THIS DEMO!

    DIRECTIONS

    1.  Fill paper cup with water.
    2.  Set it on top of the wire screen and tripod (place pie tin under tripod).

    • Do the following only for the wax cups. If it’s a pleated cup, just heat from bottom.
    3.  Light the torch and burn off the top of the cup to the water level.
    4.  Fan the flame evenly on the side of the cup to remove wax coating.
    5.  As the water starts to boil, put the full flame on the center of the side.
