Walking Firemen

  1.  Hang the paper clip on the string over the edge of the table.
  2. Give the firemen a nudge to start them in motion if needed.
  3. Note the stopping ability of the firemen at the critical instant.

 

Leaky Bottle Drop

  1.  400 ml beaker
  2. special water bottle with holes and push pin
  3. trash can
  1.  Hold the button 3′ above a trash can and pull out the push pin in the cap. Note that water is coming out the bottom of the bottle.
  2. Drop the bottle and note that the water stops coming out the bottom holes.

 

Pasco Air Track Launcher

  1.  air track with launcher device attached
  2. air source and hose
  3. pasco accessories kit with 2 carts
  4. electric glider launcher power supply
  5. digital stopwatch
  6. lab jack
  7. fluke DMM 75
  8. 2 BB leads
  1.  Set up as shown but with only one cart.
  2. Plug the launcher device into the back of the power supply. Connect the voltmeter to the back of the power supply.
  3. Set up ‘energy’ knob to the marked point, turn the switch on. Charge the launcher until the light indicates it is ready.
  4. Push launch button on power supply at the same time you start the stopwatch. Time the cart for a set distance.
  5. Add the second cart and repeat the process.

Air Track, Pasco

  7. C-clamp
  1.  Set up as shown. Attach the string to the cart by putting a loop under the bumper guard attachment then bringing the string over the top of the bumper guard.
  2. Attach a bumper guard at the left end of the track and the pulley accessory at the right end. Hang the weight holder and weights on the end of the string as shown.
  3. Turn on air source.
  4. Time the glider’s acceleration with the stopwatch.
  5. Vary the weight and repeat step 3.
  6. Does the acceleration change?

 

Atwood Machine

  4. 2 small weight holders
  5. stopwatch
  6. telescope clamp
  7. meter stick
  1.  Place an equal amount of weight on each weight hanger.
  2. Shift some weight from one hanger to the other.
  3. Measure fall distance.
  4. Time fall with each weight change.
  5. Observe the acceleration as one side becomes heavier.
