Water Projectile Tank

 Lab Equipment  Directions
  1.  Water tank
  2. Water cooler pump and hoses
  3. pressure bottle
  4. adjustable angle nozzle
  5. 2-3 bottles fluorescent water
  6. extension cord
  1.  Pour all three gallons of water into the tank
  2. Turn on the attached light.
  3. Start the pump.
  4. Adjust the nozzle to the desired.

 

Track, Tri-Level

  1.  Brachistochrome curve track
  2. 3 identical steel balls
  3. cardboard box for ball catcher
  1.  Place the catcher at the end of the track.
  2. Place the three balls, one at the top of each track.
  3. Release all three simultaneously.
  4. Observe which one reaches the bottom first. Can you tell?
  5. Hold two balls at a set distance apart on the top track, then release both at once. Observe the distance between the balls as they go down the track. Repeat on the next track. Finally repeat on the brachistochrome curve. Notice on this final curve that the second ball always catches the first by the time it reaches the bottom.

 

Twirl-a-Bob

  1.  Twirl-a-bob (small)
  1.  Hold tube in the center with rubber ball on top.
  2. Swing tube gently to start rotational motion of the rubber ball.
  3. As more force is used to swing ball, its radius of rotation will increase and bag of washers will rise.
  4. Conservation of angular momentum can be shown by quickly pulling on bag of washers.

 

Rolling Chain

  1.  Chain loop
  2. disc mounted on electric drill
  3. screwdriver (flat) or wooden ruler
  4. carpet swath (on shelves of small carts)
  5. thick book
  6. extension cord or plugstrip
May need to include a large box to act as a catcher for the chain at the end of its run.
  1.  Fit the chain around the perimeter of the disc.
  2. Hold the drill horizontally above the carpet swath on the floor. Turn on the drill.
  3. Using the screwdriver nudge the chain slowly off the disc.
  4. Place the book in the path the chain will follow, then release the chain to jump over the book.

 

Rotational Forces in Water

  1.  Rotating platform
  2. 2 plastic containers with lids and balls
  3. wooden support
  1.  Place the bottom rod of wooden support into hole in the center of the platform. Place containers into holes in the wooden platform. This secures containers from flying off when platform is rotated.
  2. Place fingers on top of hanging ball container and spin the platform, drawing attention to the ball swinging outward.
  3. Place fingers on top of floating ball container and spin the platform, drawing attention to the ball swinging inward.

 

Projectile Motion

  1.  meter stick on lab stand with attached silver balls
  1.  To demonstrate the positions of a projectile shot at a 45 degree angle, attach the loop of string to the bottom hook.
  2. To demonstrate the positions of a projectile shot horizontally, holding the meter stick, remove the loop from the hook and slowly lower the stick.
  3. To demonstrate the positions of a projectile shot straight up, raise the meter stick almost vertically and you see that corresponding balls line up side by side.

 

Monkey Gun (Small)

  1.  small monkey gun
  2. 2 projectiles and plastic container
  3. small lab stand
  4. 90 degree clamp
  1.  Level and cock monkey gun by pulling back lever arm and securing between the pins.
  2. Place one ball on the extended rod and the other in the shallow depression.
  3. Fire the gun by flicking up the lever arm from between the pins.
  4. The two balls should hit the floor or table simultaneously.
